Science. Technology. People.

ecometric has, in just two years, developed, trialled and brought to market a new approach to assessing soil carbon.  It responds to a proven demand from landowners, businesses, government and the people to accelerate our response to climate change by recognising the role that the soils that cover much of our planet’s land mass have to play.

The senior management team have a deep altruistic passion to support the reversal of climate change and biodiversity decline through improved soil management.  They also have a deep understanding of farming and a belief in the role of technology as the enabler.

  • Farmer, fast jet pilot, Red Arrow Pilot & agri-tech innovator in remote data analysis.

David is from a farming family and has that deep understanding of the land and the challenges facing the agricultural community that can only come from being part of it. As a military aviator he learned about remote sensing technologies, on which so much of his RAF life depended, and went on to apply these techniques to remotely assessing the farmed and natural world.

Leaving the RAF he founded Spectrum, supplying low-cost remote sensing and imagery analysis for farmers using military grade sensors mounted on very light aircraft. The information captured on crop canopies often indicated limiting factors within the underlying soil that couldn’t be directly seen or measured.

He set-up ecometric to develop methods to remotely evaluate these soil parameters. Soil organic carbon was quickly assessed as the most important performance indicator which created a link between agricultural productivity and climate change mitigation. The ambition took root, to deliver soil management solutions at a scale that would work to address climate change whilst improving farm productivity, our soils and the biodiversity on which our agricultural systems depend.
